Can you smell gas? Do not call us first.

Get everyone outside, do not use light switches or anything that could spark, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Once they have made it safe, we can repair the appliance.

What to do right now

A minute spent on the stopcock can save a ceiling. Here is what our engineers tell callers.

Burst pipe or a bad leak
  1. Turn off the water at the stopcock. It is usually under the kitchen sink or where the pipe comes into the house.
  2. Turn on the cold taps to drain the system, and switch off any electric water heaters.
  3. Catch what you can with buckets and towels, and move valuables away from the water.
Water coming through the ceiling
  1. Turn off the stopcock straight away.
  2. If water is near lights or sockets, switch off the electricity at the fuse box and do not touch wet switches.
  3. Put a bucket underneath. If the ceiling bulges, carefully pierce it with a screwdriver to let the water out in one place.
No heating or hot water
  1. Check the boiler display for an error code and take a photo of it for us.
  2. Look at the pressure gauge. If it is below 1 bar, it may need topping up, and we can talk you through it on the phone.
  3. Check the thermostat has batteries and is set above room temperature.
Frozen pipes
  1. Turn off the water at the stopcock.
  2. Thaw the pipe slowly with a hot water bottle or a hairdryer on low, starting from the tap end.
  3. Never use a blowtorch or naked flame.
