Pet advice

Little things that make a big difference

Short, practical answers to the questions we hear most in the consult room. If you are worried about your pet, always call us.

Dogs

Is chocolate really that dangerous?

Read

Yes. Chocolate contains theobromine, which dogs process very slowly. Dark and baking chocolate are the most dangerous, but milk chocolate can still make a small dog ill.

If your dog has eaten chocolate, note the type, the amount and the time, and call us straight away. Do not wait for symptoms.

Cats

Microchipping your cat: the law in England

Read

Since June 2024, pet cats in England must be microchipped before they are 20 weeks old, and their details kept up to date on a database.

A chip takes a few seconds to fit and is the best way to get a lost cat home. It is free for kittens on our health plan.

Rabbits

Why rabbits need a friend

Read

Rabbits are social animals and can become stressed and lonely on their own. Most are happiest in neutered pairs.

We can help you bond a new pair safely, and advise on space: a hutch alone is not enough.

Dogs

How to remove a tick safely

Read

Use a tick hook, not your fingers. Slide it under the tick close to the skin, twist gently and lift away.

Do not squeeze, burn or smother the tick. If you are unsure, pop in and a nurse will remove it for free.

Cats

Lilies and cats do not mix

Read

Every part of a lily is toxic to cats, including the pollen and the water in the vase. Even a small amount can cause kidney failure.

If your cat may have touched a lily, call us immediately, even if they seem fine.

All pets

Fireworks season without the fear

Read

Walk dogs before dark, keep cats indoors, and close curtains with a radio or TV on.

Make a den where your pet can hide. For very anxious pets, book a chat with us a few weeks before so we can plan calming support.

Dogs

Hot cars and hot pavements

Read

Dogs can die in a hot car within minutes, even with a window open. Never leave them, not even for a quick trip.

If the pavement is too hot for the back of your hand, it is too hot for paws. Walk early or late on warm days.

All pets

Brushing your pet’s teeth

Read

Dental disease affects most dogs and cats over three. Daily brushing with a pet toothpaste is the best prevention.

Start slowly with a finger brush and lots of praise. A nurse can show you how at a free dental check.

Not sure if it is serious?

Call us and a nurse will talk it through. If you need us out of hours, our emergency partner is always open.
