Coat care

Happy coat, happy dog

A little brushing at home makes every groom quicker, kinder and cheaper. Pick your dog's coat for our tips.

Coat type
A French Bulldog having a bath

Smooth coats

Brush
Once a week
Groom
Bath and tidy every 8 to 12 weeks
Tools
Rubber curry brush, Soft bristle brush

A rubber mitt in the bath lifts more loose hair than any brush.

A fluffy dog being brushed on a blanket

Double coats

Brush
Two or three times a week
Groom
De-shed every 6 to 8 weeks
Tools
Undercoat rake, Slicker brush, Wide tooth comb

Never shave a double coat. It protects them from heat as well as cold.

A curly coated doodle looking at the camera

Curly coats

Brush
Every day or two
Groom
Full groom every 4 to 6 weeks
Tools
Slicker brush, Metal comb

Brush, then comb right down to the skin. If the comb snags, there is a knot.

A wire haired terrier

Wiry coats

Brush
Once or twice a week
Groom
Hand strip or clip every 8 to 10 weeks
Tools
Slicker brush, Stripping comb

Hand stripping keeps the colour and the weatherproof texture.

A Cocker Spaniel with long silky ears

Long and silky coats

Brush
Every day
Groom
Full groom every 6 weeks
Tools
Pin brush, Metal comb, Detangling spray

Pay extra attention behind the ears and under the legs, where mats start.
